August 21 Vocalists Lori Michaels and Irvis Macy featured, with 4 or 5 jam sets to follow.

Musicians please note: By participating in the monthly jams, you won't have to pay the admission fee and you'll get a free drink on us. Or, if you feel shy about performing for a big audience or simply can't get ehough of jamming, the Society also holds informal open jams every second and fourth Monday at the private club from 5 to 7. (April 11 and 25, May 16 and 30, and so on)

Recent Sessions

May 15 (that's right--not the 22nd):May feature award winners from high-school music programs, with 4 or 5 jam sets to follow.

June 19: Swing Shift featured, with 4am sets.

July 17: Route 66 Revelers featured, with 4jam sets .

April 17: Featured band was West Side Sound.

For the rest of 2011, Rio Grande Jazz Society monthly meetings will be on the third Sunday of each month. 2011 is also the 25th anniversary of the Rio Grande Jazz Society (originally the Rio Grande Red Hot Chile and Jazz Society) and we are planning to celebrate with a special event on October 19: The Original Wildcat Jass Band out of Tucson, Arizona.. Details will be posted here as they become available.

Meetings are held at a private club. Usually, we have a featured band the first hour, starting at 1:30 PM, and then four or five jam sets until around 5. Musicians welcome!

    Plus..........Kurt Abel, banjo exponent extraordinaire who plays with Cats n jammers Jazz Band of Sacramento and Cell Block Seven, Lodi, brought his banjo and CD's, which he cut with Evan Christopher (bass player from New orleans). Plus....... Scott Hooker and his wife Jana were be here from Atlanta and played piano for a short set. No jams this month.

    January 16, 2011: An all-swing extravaganza with five jam sets. No featured band this month.We will have the annual Musician Appreciation event this month.

    December 19, 2010: Prestige, the Manzano High show choir, makes its always entertaining annual appearance. In past years, the December session has included the annual Musician Appreciation Dinner. But because it occurs so close to the holidays, the Society board has decided to move it to January 2011.
